How the science works, in plain language.

What is metabolomics?

Metabolomics is the study of small molecules called metabolites. These molecules are involved in metabolism and can reflect biological processes occurring in the body.

Why serum metabolites?

Serum carries metabolites that reflect what is happening in the body. OncoVeryx reads the patterns in these metabolites that are linked to cancer.

LC-HRMS

Liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry is used to profile the metabolites present in the serum sample.

Proprietary algorithmic interpretation

Proprietary deep-learning algorithms analyse the metabolite patterns and identify the signatures associated with cancer.

Tissue-of-origin support

When a cancer-associated signature is detected, further analysis pinpoints the most likely tissue-of-origin possibilities to guide follow-up.

They describe the developer’s validation studies and do not guarantee individual results. No screening test is perfect. False positive and false negative results can occur. All performance claims must be reviewed against approved source documents and receive the necessary regulatory and legal sign-off before publication for South African marketing.

Our approach

Metabolomics

OncoVeryx measures the small molecules your body produces, called metabolites. Cancer shifts these patterns early, even before a tumour grows large enough to shed DNA into the blood.

The usual approach

Genomics (cell-free DNA)

Most multi-cancer blood tests rely on fragments of tumour DNA. Early tumours often shed very little DNA, so these tests can miss cancers at the earliest stages.

Detects cancer across all stages, I through IV

OncoVeryx holds a high sensitivity even at the earliest stages and in people with no symptoms, where many conventional and DNA-based tests struggle. It is not evaluated for pre-cancerous (Stage 0) lesions.

Reported cancer-detection sensitivity

Sensitivity is how often a test correctly flags people who do have cancer. Higher is better.

How to read this: these two figures come from separate studies, not a direct head-to-head trial. Different studies use different patients and methods, so the exact numbers are not perfectly comparable. The OncoVeryx figure is reported in the manufacturer’s clinical validation study. All performance and comparison claims are pending South African legal and regulatory sign-off. Screening for 55 cancers does not mean the test detects all cancers. OncoVeryx is a screening test that does not diagnose cancer: a positive result requires clinical evaluation, and a negative result does not rule out cancer.
